Ornate knots were used by the Celtic/Viking peoples of Europe for centuries for decoration. For the Celts the knots had religious and symbolic meaning. Later, Christian monks used them to illuminate books and it is primarily via these manuscripts that we have so many examples of the art form.

Today, these knots are still being designed by traditional craftsmen and can often be seen on jewelry, particularly wedding rings, where the intertwining knot is used to symbolize eternity.

Gordian Knot Designer is an easy to use design package for the creation of Celtic Knots (also known as plait work, knot work and rope work). You can use Gordian Knot Designer as an art package to create beautiful works of art or as a design tool to experiment with ideas for:

Once you have finished with a design you can choose to print it out, save it to your Photo Library or email it to a friend. Your work will be saved in the standard PNG format so it can be uploaded into many different types of graphic manipulation packages for further refinement.
